Robert De Niro's Waiting... Talking Italian

"Robert De Niro's Waiting..." is a song written and recorded by English girl group Bananarama. It was the second single released from their self-titled second album in 1984. Siobhan Fahey states on her website: "Robert de Niro heard of the 'tribute' song, and rang our council flat and arranged to meet us for drinks and dinner. We were thrilled to meet a bona fide movie star." How many movie stars have songs written about them?

Here are some 1/6 scale 12-inch figures released based on characters played by Robert De Niro in the movies, in an attempt to capture his likeness. Do they all resemble him? You tell me. Who else am I talking to? There's nobody else here.... Ha Ha I had to put that in ;p

This newest soon-to-be-released 12-inch Soldier Story Waffen SS Panzergrenadier from the Wiking Division (1945 Hungary) has got me all excited about a World War II German military figure again. There have been a lot of WWII Germans released already but this one got me taking a second look. That's because this latest 1/6 scale German motorised or mechanized infantry i.e. Panzergrenadier (abbreviated PzGren or Pzg) is loaded to the hilt with lots of new, interesting and improved gear.

"You talkin' to me?" Brother Production Cab Driver "Travis" Review III

Travis Bickle: "You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? You talkin' to me? Then who the hell else are you talking... you talking to me? Well I'm the only one here. Who the f**k do you think you're talking to?"

The quote "You talkin' to me?" delivered by Travis Bickle, played by Robert De Niro in the 1976 movie "Taxi Driver" has become a pop culture icon, and made De Niro a star. "Taxi Driver" is particularly important to De Niro's career; his iconic performance as Travis Bickle shot him to stardom and forever linked De Niro's name with Bickle's famous "You talkin' to me?" monologue, which De Niro largely improvised.

New from Heroic - Face Off (Preview)

"Face/Off" is a 1997 action film directed by John Woo, starring John Travolta as FBI Special Agent Sean Archer and Nicolas Cage as Freelance terrorist Castor Troy. The two are sworn enemies who assume the physical appearance of one another after undergoing an experimental surgical procedure to switch faces, hence "face OFF" but it also means "to face off with each other" - great play on words.

And now coming from Heroic, you get two faces for the price of one :)

Astonishing feat by limbless Frenchman

On September 19, 2010, Philippe Croizon, a 42-year-old former metalworker, set off from Folkestone, Kent, in southern England at around 6 am in an attempt to swim across the English channel, expecting to reach France within 24 hours but managed to complete the crossing and arrived at Wissant in just 13-and-a-half hours, just before 9.30pm.

What makes this feat most astonishing and amazing is the fact that the Frenchman has become the first limbless man in history to swim across the 33-kilometer (20.5 miles) English Channel.

Philippe Croizon, 42, of Chatelleraut, France, suffered a devastating accident 16 years ago in 1994 when he was electrically shocked with 20,000 volts while removing a television aerial on a roof hit a power line. Doctors were forced to amputate his arms and legs.

He only taught himself to swim in the last two years and does so using prosthetic legs and a snorkel and mask. The amputee trained for 35 hours a week for the past two years and his endeavour attracted letters of support from President Sarkozy and other politicians.

Propelled by his specially designed flipper-shaped prosthetic legs and steadying himself with the stumps of his arms, Croizon kept up a constant speed in good weather, and was accompanied by dolphins for part of the 33-kilometre swim, his support team said.

After completing the 21-mile challenge, Mr Croizon told the BBC that at no point did he feel he was not going to make it, despite pains and aches all over his body. He said his aim was to inspire all those ''who think life is nothing but suffering''.

“I did it! It’s crazy!” said Croizon. “I’ve done this for myself, for my family, and for all those who have suffered tragedy and lost their taste for life.”

Well done, Philippe :) Thank you for showing us that nothing is impossible when you set your mind to it!

Brother Production 1/6 Cab Driver "Travis" Special Edition Review 1

"Taxi Driver" is a 1976 American drama film directed by Martin Scorsese and written by Paul Schrader. The film is set in New York City, soon after the Vietnam War and stars Robert De Niro together with Albert Brooks, Harvey Keitel, Leonard Harris, Peter Boyle, Cybill Shepherd, and a young Jodie Foster. The film was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won the Palme d'Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival. [source: wiki]

The film gained further notoriety when John Hinckley, Jr. confessed that it was his obsession with Foster's role that made him attempt to assassinate Ronald Reagan in 1981.

This is the recently released Brother Production Special Edition 1/6 scale Cab Driver "Travis" from their Crazy Killer Collection Series 170. There is no doubt who "Travis" is supposed to be. In "Taxi Driver", Travis Bickle (Robert De Niro) is a lonely and depressed young man, and a former Marine living in Manhattan.

Back of the box gives a list of the contents but since this is the SPECIAL limited EDITION, there are some more surprises inside ;)

G.I. JOE "Invasion of Inchon" September 15, 1950

This week the United States and South Korea commemorated the 60th Incheon Landing Operations.

The Battle of Inchon (Korean: 인천 상륙 작전, Hanja: 仁川上陸作戰, Incheon Sangnyuk Jakjeon; code name: Operation Chromite) was an amphibious invasion and battle of the Korean War that resulted in a decisive victory and strategic reversal in favor of the United Nations (UN).

The battle began on September 15, 1950, and ended around September 17. Through a surprise amphibious assault far from the Pusan Perimeter that UN and South Korean forces were desperately defending, the largely undefended city of Incheon was secured after being bombed by UN forces. The battle ended a string of victories by the invading North Korean People's Army (NKPA). The subsequent UN recapture of nearby Seoul partially severed NKPA's supply lines in South Korea.

The majority of United Nations ground forces involved were U.S. Marines, commanded by General of the Army Douglas MacArthur. MacArthur was the driving force behind the operation, overcoming the strong misgivings of more cautious generals to a risky assault over extremely unfavorable terrain.

Triad Toys 1/6 Scale Zorro Collectible Figure Preview

More men with swords (see my previous posts)

In 1919, a novelist named Johnston McCulley wrote a short story entitled "The Curse of Capistrano", which starred a fantastic swordsman named Zorro. Little did McCulley know that his masked crusader would go on to be one of the most successful characters of all time and would influence a lifetime of other heroes and stories of its kind.

Modern Ninjas 1+2+3

From traditional ninjas (see previous post) to modern ninjas

The G.I. Joe series of comic books featured ninja far more than the cartoon series, and many story arcs revolved around Scarlett, Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow, Jinx, Kamakura, Firefly and the Arashikage ninja clan, which consisted of an extended family of ninja characters (never featured in the toyline or cartoon).

And here are some 1/6 scale ninjas featured in the G.I. Joe storyline: one (1) Storm Shadow, two (2) Firefly and three (3) Snake-Eyes.

We Are Ninja

Here's a group shot of a couple of ninjas, just for fun. The mysterious nature of the ninja has long captured popular imagination in Japan, and later the rest of the world. Ninjas figure prominently in folklore and legend, and as a result it is often difficult to separate historical fact from myth. Some legendary abilities include invisibility, walking on water, and control over natural elements. The ninja is also prevalent in popular culture, appearing in many forms of entertainment media.

More pictures taken of the Crazy Owners 1:6 scale 12-inch Camouflage Ninja (Limited Edition - only 200 pieces available worldwide) after having seen the outfit and weapons he comes with in the earlier post. PREVIEW of Sideshow STAR WARS 1:6 Blackhole Stormtrooper

Since Sideshow Collectibles' announcement that they will be releasing the Star Wars Blackhole Stormtrooper or Shadow Stormtrooper, official pictures have now been released of these specialized Imperial stormtroopers, an elite squadron within the Imperial stormtroopers who were assigned an experimental cloaking armor, allowing them to disappear in virtually any environment.

Crazy Owners 1:6 Camouflage Ninja (Limited Edition) REVIEW 1

Firefly was once a ninja in the Koga Ninja Clan before he became a COBRA Saboteur. Having reviewed the Sideshow Collectibles 1:6 scale COBRA FIREFLY 12-inch action figure from their "G.I. Joe - A real American hero" line recently, I thought this Crazy Owners Camouflage Ninja figure was a nice addition and would make a good companion to Sideshow's Firefly. It could be Firefly's beginning before he became a COBRA operative and enemy of G.I. Joe.

This Crazy Owners 1:6 scale 12-inch Camouflage Ninja figure is apparently limited to 200 pieces worldwide. The regular standard version is the Martial Ninja and comes in basic black (see the preview pictures HERE). I got this figure solely because he wasn't black, brown or white - he's a camouflaged ninja in grey tones and something I felt was quite different from the usual offerings of ninja!

Meet Daniel Picard, Photographer Extraordinaire

Blogging has its privileges and through my blog, I've gotten to know a lot of people from many countries and from all walks of life who have dropped a note or comment and with whom I've found a connection even though we may be thousands of miles away :)

Most recently, I have been blessed to know a Photographer Extraordinaire from Canada who has CRAZY photography and digital imaging skills.

Daniel Picard is a freelance photographer and his summer project this year has been to make his toys look alive in the real world at real size i.e. 1:1 scale (Check out his website: http://www.danielpicard.com/ - the intro has a few, and you can see more under Toys). Dan mostly collects Ashley Wood robots but he does pick up some good 'ol military / G.I. Joe / Star Wars stuff once in a while. Here are a few of his favorites which he has graciously allowed me to post just to show you what I mean when I say his pictures are STUNNING!

Pay a visit his site: http://www.danielpicard.com/ and be blown away by his photography skills. Dan doesn't just take pictures of toys; his photos of animals, people, events, places and vehicles are just as AWESOME! IMHO He is truly an ARTIST with amazing talent. I envy his friends and loved ones because every time he takes a picture, it's a piece of ART, fit to be framed and displayed!

I just felt that I should share his skills with all the readers out there. ENJOY!

New Obstacle Course for the SAF

This was reported on the news and in newspapers: The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has introduced a new Vocation Obstacle Course (VOC), while keeping the existing Standard Obstacle Course (SOC). Soldiers in the Basic Military Training, Specialist Cadet Course, and Officer Cadet Course will continue the current progressive training and individual qualification through the SOC with the re-designed obstacles. Soldiers in the units will embark on the new team-based VOC, which is customised to each vocation's combat skills and load, and places greater emphasis on team qualification led by section commanders.

Sideshow COBRA Firefly 1:6 Figure Review III

HERE IT IS! Now let's see how the Sideshow Collectibles Firefly 12-inch figure looks with the grey camouflage hood and all his accessories in his backpack as well as his suitcase bomb. This would make it the complete figure loaded to the hilt. And I LIKE it!

Sideshow 12-inch COBRA Firefly Review II

Having seen the nice details of the loaded gear and accessories Sideshow Collectibles 1:6 scale COBRA Saboteur FIREFLY 12-inch action figure came with in the previous post, let's now look at the figure itself.

This is one of the head sculpts Sideshow has given their Firefly figure i.e. black hooded head with deep frowns for that intense, no-nonsense look. Apparently no one knows what Firefly's real name is or what he looks like, so he stays a man of mystery.

Sideshow Collectibles 1:6 scale Firefly Review 1

This was one figure I did not expect to buy as it wasn't on my "WANT" list but upon seeing the actual product, it became a MUST have piece :) I'm talking about the Sideshow 1:6 scale COBRA Saboteur FIREFLY 12-inch action figure from their "G.I. Joe - A real American hero" line

Sideshow's Backstory on Firefly:
Very little is known of FIREFLY beyond his proficiency in sabotage, infiltration and espionage. Early in his life, FIREFLY was brought into the Koga Ninja Clan, and his aptitude earned him the moniker of Faceless Master. Eventually FIREFLY attempted to aid COBRA COMMANDER in eliminating the man known as SNAKE-EYES as he was training with the Arashikage Clan. This attempt did not succeed but would eventually lead to future encounters with the G.I. JOE team and an ensuing enmity between the two. FIREFLY is ingenious in his capabilities with explosives and can employ them with surgical precision. He is quite frankly a connoisseur of terror thus making him all the more crucial to COBRA's agenda and all the more lethal to G.I. JOE.

As usual, Sideshow's packaging doesn't disappoint. The box is sturdy with magnetic closures and very nice graphics. I like the design with the red-white-and-blue feel to it.

Dragon WWII SAS Officer "Eddie Mac" Review

The Special Air Service was a unit of the British Army during the Second World War, formed in July 1941 by David Stirling and originally called "L" Detachment, Special Air Service Brigade. It was conceived as a commando force to operate behind enemy lines in the North African Campaign and initially consisted of five officers and 60 other ranks. [source: wiki]

This is the recently released DML Dragon Models Ltd 1:6 scale 12-inch SAS Officer Lieutenant "Eddie Mac", operating in the North African Campaign of the Second World War, around 1942-43. This is probably one of the most distinct image of the British SAS operating behind enemy lines during WWII.

Sideshow Star Wars BlackHole Trooper NEXT

The shadow stormtroopers, sometimes called Blackhole stormtroopers because of their use under Agent Blackhole, were specialized Imperial stormtroopers and were the successors of the Republic's clone shadow troopers.

Blast from the Past #1: Space Ghost!

Since we are on the topic of ghosts: there was the Hot Toys 1:6 Ghost Rider preview pictures, Medicom 12-inch RAH Ghost Rider action figure posting, Hasbro Ultimate Ghost Rider Flame Cycle and 1:6 Ghost Rider riding Hell Cycle PLUS this is the "Hungry Ghost" month afterall (In Chinese tradition, the fifteenth day of the seventh month in the lunar calendar is called Ghost Day and the seventh month in general is regarded as the Ghost Month (鬼月), in which ghosts and spirits, including those of the deceased ancestors, come out from the lower realm to visit the living), there's one more ghost worth mentioning and that is SPACE GHOST!

Brother Production Presents: HARD-BOILED II "Harry" Preview

This is the Brother Production 1:6 scale 12-inch Custom Made Action Figure HARD-BOILED II "Harry" based on the character played by Clint Eastwood in the "Dirty Harry" movies. Clint Eastwood is San Francisco Police Department Inspector Harold Francis "Dirty Harry" Callahan in the films Dirty Harry (1971), Magnum Force (1973), The Enforcer (1976), Sudden Impact (1983), and The Dead Pool (1988).

1:6 Ghost Rider on his Hell Cycle

We've seen the Medicom RAH 12-inch Ghost Rider pictures and pictures of the Hasbro 1:6 Ghost Rider Flame Cycle in the last post, now let's put the two together i.e. Rider on his bike :)

In this instance, Medicom's smaller size body works well to fit onto the Hasbro 1:6 Flame Cycle as both rider and bike looks like they belong together.

1:6 scale Ghost Rider Flame Cycle

Nicolas Cage who played Johnny Blaze in the 2007 superhero film "Ghost Rider" rode a Buell motorcycle for Blaze's stunt cycle and a heavily customized hardtail chopper named "Grace" which transformed into the "Hell Cycle". The Hell Cycle's wheels, made of pure flames in the comics, were changed to solid tires covered in flames in order to give the motorcycle more weight onscreen.

Medicom RAH 1:6 Ghost Rider Figure Review

"I feel like my skull is on fire, but I'm good. I'm the only one who can walk in both worlds. I'm the Ghost Rider. " These were words uttered by Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze in the 2007 superhero film "Ghost Rider" about a stunt motorcyclist who morphs into the demon vigilante Ghost Rider, which is based on the character of the same name that appeared in Marvel Comics.

$9,000 Award for NSmen

SINGAPORE citizens who have served their national service will each receive $9,000 through a new award to be given by the Ministry of Defence (Mindef). The National Service Recognition Award (NSRA) will help to fund the cost of operationally ready national servicemen's (NSmen's) education and also help them buy a home. Commanders will receive a larger sum.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who announced the implementation of the award at the National Day Rally yesterday, said: "It is a significant tangible recognition of the sacrifices, efforts and contributions of our national servicemen. It's for Singapore citizens only."

This will be a token of appreciation for the time and effort citizens give to serve national service, he added. Mr Lee said: "National service makes a heavy demand on male residents and, I should say, on their spouses and families, too." He elaborated that male Singapore residents not only have to serve two years of full-time national service and many more years as an NSman, but also try to build their careers and raise their families.

The sum will be paid in tranches at significant milestones of an NSman's service.

Too bad I've already completed my cycle. During my time, the only incentive was $20 for achieving GOLD for IPPT. Then during reservist, it was increased to $400 plus another $200 for Marksmanship and medals for Good Conduct and Long Service. Good to know the younger generation are getting their just rewards. Kudos to the government.
